The King of Pentacles is perhaps my favorite of the Kings of Tarot. The Universal Waite depicts a king with lavish embroidered robe sitting upon a decorative throne on the parapets of an impressive castle. To say that he represents material wealth is rather obvious, but what is his message?
The King of Pentacles calls on you to work methodically and meticulously in your pursuits. He is not one given to flights of fancy, but rather to clear planning, putting into place clear strategies, then executing those strategies and always coming to the expected result. Sometimes in life in our material or career pursuits we tend to just make it up as we go. Many times we may have started with a plan, but at some point things went awry and we just kept going. In these situations the King of Pentacles calls on you to stop making it up as you go. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and that’s okay. Step back, reassess, re-plan with the new reality, and move forward again. This is the only way to achieve the goals and outcomes you desire.
While the King of Pentacles is definitely about material pursuits, he is not about greed. A warning of the King of Pentacles is to not let success make you greedy or too proud. There is, of course, nothing wrong with being proud of one’s achievements, but it is always important to remember what got you there: your planning, hard work, and the help of others. On reminder of this card is that none of us gets anywhere without the help of others. If we look hard enough at our own lives we can find many places where we have been helped on our way.
The King of Pentacles calls on you to be generous with what you have: anyone in business can tell you that you have to spend money to make money. This is true in other parts of life as well. Call it what you will, but what you put out and give to others you also get in return. Greed and uncaring attitudes towards others may help you achieve material wealth, but that will be all you have. The King of Pentacles suggests a life of true wealth, material and spiritual. This can only be achieved by being generous with what you have been given and being grateful for those who have helped you.
When meditating on this card today think of your current endeavors. Are you making things up as you go or do you have a plan? If you do have a plan, are you on target or do you need to go back to the drawing board and re-plan? With what you have been given or what you have achieved, do you hold it tight to the chest, or are you generous helping other seeds to grow as well?
