The Lord of the Rings Tarot is a deck that I absolutely love. This is not only because I am a HUGE Tolkien nerd (I know things about Middle-earth that no sane human should probably know) but it’s also because it’s a surprisingly deep deck if you know the mythology and history of Middle-earth.
In this deck each card has an image from somewhere in the Tolkien mythos as well as text that tells a bit about the image. It’s fascinating to me because each of these images takes the traditional Tarot meaning of the card, but goes even deeper by relating it to an event in Middle-earth. This can really be seen in today’s card, the Two of Swords.
The Two of Swords is all about difficult decisions and choices. While this card image is clearly quite different from the traditional imagery of the card, it’s nonetheless quite powerful. For those not familiar with the story what’s happening here is the free peoples of Middle-earth have come together to discuss the threat of Sauron and the Ring. Sauron is quite literally be physically embodiment of evil as is the Ring. In this meeting they must deal with how to address the possible annihilation of all life and freedom in the world forever. Talk about tough choices. Needless to say, the meeting is tense and difficult.
While we may never be faced with such gargantuan tasks in our lives, we are frequently faced with challenges and choices that will forever alter our lives. In the Council of Elrond had they not ultimately decided to send Frodo and Sam with the Ring, the fate of the entire world would have been quite different. Many times when making these decisions we tend to rely on mere emotion and let fear take control, which almost happened in the Council. However, it was bravery and a sense of responsibility that ultimately won the day. It was the willingness to look at the truth plainly for what it was, and make a decision to do the best possible rather than shrink in fear or ignore it like others suggested.
Are you facing challenges or choices in life that seem insurmountable right now? Are there choices you have to make, but aren’t sure how to go about it? The Two of Swords is calling you to cut through the fear and illusion. Look at things for what they are, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Make a calm rational decision from that point. Take responsibility for those things you must and understand that even though the choice may be difficult, choices are needed to move forward. Don’t worry about whether it’s the “right” choice or not. Just make a choice and move forward. If you trust your intuition and look at reality for what it is, you will move in the direction you need.
The Lord of the Rings Tarot is a must have deck for any Tolkien enthusiast! It’s rich and beautiful! Check it out at any link or image in this post.
